Corn Product Trait Selection is Important

Corn product selection and placement should include selecting the right trait package for each corn product and field to match the expected insect and weed pressure. Seed treatments providing protection against early-season pests help to maximize the corn stand, uniformity, and vigor for higher yield potential. Products with DroughtGard® Hybrids technology can also help to maximize yield potential in drought conditions.

Western corn rootworm (WCR) can be a problematic below-ground insect pest in corn-on-corn acres. Crop rotation has been one of the most effective ways to manage WCR. In all corn fields, the above-ground pest corn earworm (CEW) can be a problem. For corn-on-corn acres, corn products with the SmartStax® trait offer multiple modes of action for WCR control, and are recommended in fields where WCR pressure is high. Corn products with the Genuity® VT Triple PRO® trait offer a single mode of action against WCR, and can be effective on fields where WCR pressure is low to moderate.

13;10;

In fields where corn is rotated with other non-host crops to WCR, corn products with the VT Double PRO® trait are recommended for protection against above-ground insect pests, including CEW.

13;10;

Corn products with the SmartStax® trait offer the broadest spectrum of insect protection on the market, including two modes of action (MOA) against both WCR and CEW and three MOA against fall armyworm. Multiple MOA are important for better efficacy and to help prevent insect resistance. These products also have tolerance to the herbicides glyphosate (Roundup Ready® 2) and glufosinate (LibertyLink®). Corn products with Genuity® VT Triple PRO® and VT Double PRO® traits have herbicide tolerance to glyphosate only (Table 1).

Acceleron® Seed Applied Solutions provide protection against disease and early-season insects with DEKALB® corn brand products. Multiple modes of action offered with these products help to reduce disease and insect pressure. The seeds are not only protected during the critical first 30 days, but the crop is also protected as it grows, helping to maximize yield potential. In addition, newly advanced DEKALB® brand corn products will be treated with Acceleron® B-300 SAT, which is a biological product containing the microbe Penicillium bilaiae. The microbe grows along plant roots and helps increase nutrient availability and uptake. By improving nutrient access, the product can help to enhance root and shoot development and yield potential. The biological will be included on all new DEKALB corn brand products deployed in 2017, except in California where Acceleron B-300 SAT has not been registered.

DroughtGard® Hybrids technology, the only drought-tolerant biotechnology trait for corn, helps plants resist drought stress and minimize the risk associated with the unpredictable factor of weather. The trait helps the plant create proteins that are essential for growth, helping to support yield opportunity when water is scarce. DroughtGard Hybrids technology is available with corn products having the Genuity® VT Triple PRO® and VT Double PRO® traits.
