Roundup Ready® Xtend Crop System Update

The Roundup Ready® Xtend Crop System is an advanced weed management system designed to help control herbicide-resistant and tough-to-control broadleaf weeds in soybeans. Two of the components of the system are Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® soybeans and XtendiMax® herbicide with VaporGrip® Technology. Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® soybeans are built on the proven yield performance of Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield® technology. They are the only soybean products that provide tolerance to both dicamba and glyphosate herbicides. Current tank-mix partners, drift reduction adjuvants (DRAs), and nozzles/operating pressures approved for use with XtendiMax herbicide with VaporGrip Technology are available at www.xtendimaxapplicationrequirements.com/. Recent approval has been received for certain glyphosate tank mixes with XtendiMax® herbicide with VaporGrip® Technology. The following products containing the potassium salt (e.g. K Salt) formulation of glyphosate are approved tank-mix products:

Monsanto is committed to offering growers the lowest dicamba volatility potential solutions we can offer (Figure 1). Monsanto believes that tank mixes of dicamba with potassium salt formulations of glyphosate have lower volatility potential than tank mixes with IPA (isopropylamine) and DMA (diammonium) salts of glyphosate based on humidome testing via published ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials International) methodology. For this reason, Monsanto plans to include only glyphosate products containing potassium salt of glyphosate as approved tank mix products with XtendiMax with VaporGrip Technology at this time. Additional non-glyphosate herbicides are approved for tank mixing and are listed on the website.

Approved glyphosate products will be limited to a maximum use rate of 32 fl oz/acre for each application when tank-mixed with XtendiMax with VaporGrip Technology for in-crop use with Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybeans. This maximum use rate for glyphosate is consistent with expert recommendations for effective weed management within Roundup Ready PLUS® Crop Management Solutions.

Also, the listed glyphosate options and some other tank-mix partners will require the use of SPECIFIC approved drift reducing adjuvants (DRAs) when tank-mixed with XtendiMax with VaporGrip Technology. AG16098 (Winfield United), Capsule™ (Rosen’s Inc.), Intact™ (Precision Laboratories, LLC), and STRIKEZONE® LC (Helena), are approved DRAs listed on the website.

XtendiMax herbicide with VaporGrip Technology also offers potential soil activity for up to 14 days on certain small-seeded broadleaf weeds depending on rainfall and soil type. The wide application window allows for control of small weeds (less than 4 inches) when they are more vulnerable, such as marestail at early burndown. The ability to use this product preplant, at-planting, pre-emergence, and postemergence will allow for Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybeans to get a head start towards their high yield potential with minimal competition from weeds. With some other herbicide products, application restrictions limit use to 28 days or more before planting. In-crop applications can be made from “cracking�? up to and including beginning bloom (R1) growth stage on Roundup Ready Xtend soybeans.

A weed management program should also include traditional residual herbicides in pre-emergence and post-emergence applications that have different sites of action. Targeting weeds that have not yet emerged or are small (less than 4 inches) will contribute to a more successful weed management program.

To assist in weed resistance management, growers should scout fields after herbicide applications to detect weed escapes or shifts in weed species.
