Corn Product Traits

Corn product selection and placement should include selecting the right trait package for each corn product and field to match the expected insect and weed pressure. Questions farmers should consider include: Does the corn product include traits to protect against the above- and below-ground pests in my fields? Does the corn product offer multiple modes of action against targeted pests? Will the addition of a soil-applied insecticide be necessary to protect yield potential? Does the corn product require a separate refuge? What is the cost of planning, purchasing seed, and planting a separate refuge? What is the cost of a potential yield reduction in the refuge acres? Is the corn seed protected with an effective seed treatment? What is the cost of any seed treatment that might be added to the seed? Is the corn product approved for planting in the U.S. and does it have import approvals in key export markets?

Corn product trait options for South Dakota include:

SmartStax® RIB Complete® Corn Blend (95% insect-protected and 5% refuge seed) offers the broadest spectrum of protection against above- and below-ground insects, as well as herbicide tolerance to glyphosate and glufosinate. A SmartStax RIB Complete Corn Blend product offers multiple modes of action for western corn rootworm (WCR), northern corn rootworm (NCRW), European corn borer (ECB), southwestern corn borer (SWCB), corn earworm (CEW), and fall armyworm (FAW). With dual modes of action for corn rootworm (CRW) larval control, it is recommended for corn-on-corn acres that can be associated with high CRW infestations.

VT Double PRO® RIB Complete® Corn Blend (95% insect-protected and 5% refuge seed) offers herbicide tolerance to glyphosate and dual modes of action for above-ground insect protection, including ECB, SWCB, CEW, and FAW. It is recommended for fields without CRW pressure.
