Seed treatments such as Acceleron® Seed Applied Solutions can help minimize disease, insect, and nematode infestations in corn and soybean crops. Cool, wet soils and improper drainage can lead to slow seed germination and seedling establishment.
Minimizing the potential for stand reduction resulting from seed- borne crop pests is an important step in crop management. The cost to replant due to pest injury can far outweigh the additional investment in properly protected seed. Wireworms, grubs, bean leaf beetles, and billbugs are a few of the seed and seedling feeding insects that can cause damage. Fusarium, and Rhizoctonia are seedling diseases that can be injurious.
With the 2017 crop, Asgrow® and DEKALB® brand seeds will be offering three tiers of seed treatment protection through Acceleron® Seed Applied Solutions - BASIC, STANDARD, and ELITE (Table 1). In addition, newly advanced DEKALB brand corn products will be treated with Acceleron® B-300 SAT, which is a biological product containing the microbe Penicillium bilaiae. The microbe grows along plant roots and helps increase nutrient availability and uptake. Research showed a two year average yield advantage of 2.9 bu/acre over a basic seed treatment. The ELITE tier will also be treated with higher rates of the fungicides prothioconazole and fluoxastrobin, which is being referred to as Enhanced Disease Control (EDC). The EDC option adds better protection of early to mid- season fungal infections from fusarium, rhizoctonia, and colletotrichum.
Enhanced Disease Control (Higher rates of Prothioconazole and Fluoxastrobin)
In all tiers, Asgrow® brand soybean seed treated by Monsanto will be treated with Acceleron® E-007 SAT, a dry seed finisher that improves seed flow through seed handling and planting equipment and reduces the stickiness of treated seeds. Also in the ELITE tier, Monsanto treated soybean seed will be treated with Acceleron® B-200 SAT, a biological product containing plant-derived flavonoids. Flavonoids attract and stimulate the growth of beneficial soil microbes which promote the colonization of roots, nodulation formation, and nitrogen fixation.
Retailers with seed treatment equipment can treat soybean seed with Acceleron® E-007 SAT, Acceleron® B-200 SAT, ILeVO®, and with the BioAg™ products Optimize® XC and TagTeam® LCO XC. Optimize® XC is a double-action inoculant that delivers the benefits of a specially selected Bradyrhizobium japonicum inoculant along with LCO (lipochitooligosaccharide) technology. The product improves nodule formation and increases nitrogen fixation. TagTeam® LCO is a triple-action inoculant that combines the LCO molecule, the phosphate-solubilizing benefits of P. bilaiae and a specially selected rhizobia inoculant. TagTeam LCO XC improves nodulation, fixation, and phosphate availability.
QuickRoots® is a microbial seed inoculant comprised of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and Trichoderma virens that can improve the availability and uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. QuickRoots is available as a talc- based dry planter box formulation and a wettable powder formulation.
ILeVO® treated seed offers protection against sudden death syndrome and nematodes in the seed zone throughout the critical growing period. Poncho®/VOTiVO® seed treatment is an insecticide and biological treatment that consists of a bacterium that lives and grows with plant roots that creates a living nematode barrier.
Consideration should be given to the utilization of optional seed treatments to help minimize agronomic risks, which can help maintain genetic yield potential. Consult with your Asgrow® and DEKALB® brands seed dealer regarding the benefits of seed treatments.
