2018 marks the second year of commercial availability of Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® soybeans. With the planting season just ahead, now is a good time to review the application requirements for the Roundup Ready® Xtend Crop System. Below are important reminders for the proper use of XtendiMax® herbicide with VaporGrip® Technology.
Mandatory training - under the new Environmental Protection Agency Restricted Use Pesticide label, mandatory training is required for ALL applicators who will be spraying XtendiMax with VaporGrip Technology.
Mandatory recordkeeping - Recordkeeping forms can be found at www.xtendimaxapplicationrequirements.com. Documentation includes daily sprayer cleanout, start and stop times, wind speed, wind direction, and temperature at boom height, as well as the type of equipment used to make these measurements. Commercial and non-commercial applicators must complete records within 48 hours.
Awareness of nearby susceptible crops - applicators must be aware of nearby susceptible crops and avoid spraying during environmental conditions conducive to drift and volatility. Do not apply when wind is blowing towards adjacent susceptible crops. Do not apply in temperature inversions. Maintain the required downwind buffer (a minimum of a 110 ft buffer at the 22 fl oz/acre rate and 220 ft at the 44 fl oz/acre rate).
Application timing - only spray between sunrise and sunset.
Wind speed - apply when wind speed (measured at boom height) is between 3 and 10 mph.
Ammonium sulfate restrictions - do not use AMS or ammonium-based additives with XtendiMax with VaporGrip Technology.
Tank-mix partners - use only approved tank-mix partners found at www.xtendimaxapplicationrequirements.com. Refer to all product labels to determine mix order or perform mix compatibility tests.
Application rate - the burndown/early preplant, preplant, at-planting, and preemergence application rate is 44 fl oz/acre (only one application is allowed); the in-crop application rate is 22 fl oz/acre for crops with Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® Technology (two in-crop applications are allowed per year).
Spray volume - apply in a minimum of 15 gallons of spray solution/acre.
Spray boom height - do not exceed a boom height of 24 inches above target pest or crop canopy.
Nozzles - use only approved nozzles within the specified pressure found at www.xtendimaxapplicationrequirements.com.
Ground speed - do not exceed 15 mph ground speed.
Spray system equipment cleanout - ensure that the entire sprayer system is properly cleaned before and after using XtendiMax with VaporGrip Technology.
XtendiMax with VaporGrip Technology can be applied to Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybeans from before planting up to and including beginning bloom (R1 stage) (Figure 1). The wide application window allows for the control of weeds when they are small (less than 4 inches) and more vulnerable, such as marestail at early burndown. For best results, apply when weeds are less than 4 inches tall.

ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW DIRECTIONS FOR USE ON PESTICIDE LABELING. IT IS A VIOLATION OF FEDERAL AND STATE LAW to use any pesticide product other than in accordance with its labeling. NOT ALL formulations of dicamba or glyphosate are approved for in-crop use with Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® soybeans. ONLY USE FORMULATIONS THAT ARE SPECIFICALLY LABELED FOR SUCH USES AND APPROVED FOR SUCH USE IN THE STATE OF APPLICATION. Contact the U.S. EPA and your state pesticide regulatory agency with any questions about the approval status of dicamba herbicide products for in-crop use with Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® soybeans.
Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® soybeans contains genes that confer tolerance to glyphosate and dicamba. Glyphosate will kill crops that are not tolerant to glyphosate. Dicamba will kill crops that are not tolerant to dicamba. Glufosinate will kill crops that are not tolerant to glufosinate.
