Soil Sampling for Soybean Cyst Nematode

Post-harvest is an ideal time to sample fields for both soil fertility and soybean cyst nematode (SCN). Yield loss is a primary symptom of SCN and can occur with or without visual symptoms.

Soil sampling procedure for SCN include the following:

  • Collect 8-inch long soil cores, preferably from underneath the crop row if soybean were grown this year.
  • 13;10;
  • Collect 15 to 20 soil cores in a “zigzag? manner throughout the sampling grid. If possible, limit to 20 acres per composite sample.
  • 13;10;
  • If grid sampling, collect one or two soil cores from every grid cell and combine cores from the number of cells that represent approximately 20 acres.
  • 13;10;
  • Do not collect samples if the soil is muddy or frozen.

If not delivered promptly to a testing facility, store the samples in a cool area, away from heat and sunlight. Do not air dry the samples.
