Volunteer Corn Management in Corn and Soybean

Volunteer corn generally has a minimal effect on corn yield potential, especially if management tools are employed. However, a study in Indiana indicated significant soybean yield loss may begin to occur when 3.7 corn plants per 20 square feet (or 8,094 plants per acre) emerge with the soybean crop.1 Research in South Dakota indicated soybean yield reductions of up to 54 percent as volunteer corn densities approached 6.5 plants per 20 square feet (or 14,164 plants per acre).2 The distribution of volunteer corn plants within an entire field should be considered when evaluating the potential for yield loss.
