Minnesota farmers attended an agAcademy event hosted by Asgrow® and DEKALB® in August, in Mapleton. The event gave local farmers the chance to learn more about the latest trends and concerns in production agriculture. Speakers with expertise in a wide range of agricultural fields presented their knowledge to attendees.
Insect Management TDR Tom Kladar presented facts and knowledge about insect infestations. Kladar outlined ways to combat yield-robbing pests, such as corn rootworm. Marv Boerboom, a line development breeder, followed with information about breeding traits and some of the more serious growth limiting factors in the area. Boerboom explained the development and implementation of the traits that are most useful and unique to the Minnesota growing region, such as green snap resistance.
Ed Usset, a grain-marketing specialist with the University of Minnesota, talked about grain-marketing strategies and the six most plausible courses of action to implement a grain-marketing plan. Dave Rhylander, Integrated Farming System® lead, displayed the potential yield, efficiency and overall profitability increases that can result from implementing IFS technologies.
Joe Kluendar, president of Farm Family Dynamics, rounded out the day with his presentation on farm continuation strategies. Kluendar’s discussion covered taxes, estate planning and best practices for ensuring the longevity of a family growing operation.
The attendees took the opportunity to listen and partake in discussions about the latest agronomic trends and issues.
