Selecting appropriate seed products that are adapted for each field is a major step toward combating diseases that may occur during the growing season. Seed treatments, Bt traits, fungicides, insecticides, and biological products can also be used to help protect seeds and/or plants from labeled pests or diseases or to enhance nutrient availability uptake. Along with diseases and insects, weeds should be controlled to help maximize yield potential. Crop rotation and tillage are additional methods to help protect the financial investment in producing a crop.
Genetics plays an important role in disease protection. Individual soybean products can have resistance or degrees of tolerance to diseases such as phytophthora root rot, brown stem rot, or frogeye leaf spot. Individual corn products may have degrees of tolerance to one or more diseases such as gray leaf spot, northern corn leaf blight, and anthracnose leaf blight. However, when additional protection is needed, the methods mentioned above are available and in some cases, will automatically be part of an investment in DEKALB® or Asgrow® brand seeds.
Acceleron® Seed Applied Solutions can help minimize disease, insect, and nematode infestations in corn and soybean crops. The cost to replant due to pest injury can far outweigh the additional investment in properly protected seed.
Three tiers of Acceleron® Seed Applied Solutions (BASIC, STANDARD, and ELITE) will be offered in 2018 for DEKALB brand seed (Table 1). STANDARD and ELITE corn tiers for SmartStax® Technology products and products without SmartStax® Technology will be treated with Acceleron® Seed Applied Solutions with NemaStrike™ Technology for nematode control (please refer to Issue 1703 for additional NemaStrike Technology information) (http://www.aganytime.com/Ag%20Anytime%20Regional%20News%20PDFs/1703CentralIllinoisNorthernIllinois_ASDK_Newsletter.pdf). SmartStax Technology products in the BASIC tier will be treated with base fungicides, Poncho®/VOTiVO® and clothianidin at a rate of 0.5 mg/seed. Products without SmartStax Technology in the BASIC tier will be treated with base fungicides and clothianidin at a rate of 0.25 mg/seed. Additionally, 2017 and 2018 corn products are treated with Acceleron® B-300 SAT, which is a biological enhanced product containing the microbe Penicillium bilaiae. The microbe grows along plant roots and helps increase nutrient availability and uptake. The ELITE tier for corn products will be treated with higher rates of the fungicides prothioconazole and fluoxastrobin, which is being referred to as Enhanced Disease Control (EDC). The EDC option enhances protection from early to mid-season fungal infections caused by fusarium, rhizoctonia, and colletotrichum. DEKALB® Disease Shield™ corn products automatically receive the ELITE tier of treatment.
Acceleron® Seed Applied Solutions for Asgrow® products for 2018 includes BASIC, STANDARD, STANDARD FN, and ELITE tiers. Monsanto treated seed will be protected by the fungicide combination of Pyraclostrobin + Metalaxyl + Fluxapyroxad across all four tiers. STANDARD and ELITE tiers will be treated with the insecticide Imidacloprid. STANDARD FN and ELITE categories will be treated with NemaStrike Technology.
Seed sellers with treating facilities have the opportunity to additionally treat Asgrow brand soybean seed with Acceleron® B-200 SAT, Acceleron® E-007 SAT, ILeVO® seed treatment and with the Monsanto BioAg™ products Optimize® XC, TagTeam® LCO XC, and QuickRoots® Soybean Multicrop Planter Box or Wettable Powder. Acceleron® B-200 SAT is a biological product containing plant-derived flavonoids. Flavonoids attract and stimulate the growth of beneficial soil microbes which promote the colonization of roots, nodulation formation, and nitrogen fixation. Acceleron® E-007 SAT is a dry seed finisher that improves seed flow through seed handling and planting equipment and reduces the stickiness of treated seeds. Optimize® XC is a double-action inoculant that delivers the benefits of a specially selected Bradyrhizobium japonicum inoculant along with LCO (lipochitooligosaccharide) technology. The product improves nodule formation and increases nitrogen fixation. TagTeam® LCO XC is a triple-action inoculant that combines the LCO molecule, the phosphate-solubilizing benefits of P. bilaiae and a specially selected rhizobia inoculant. TagTeam LCO XC improves nodulation, nitrogen fixation, and phosphate availability.
QuickRoots® Soybean Multicrop is a microbial seed inoculant comprised of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and Trichoderma virens that can improve the availability and uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. QuickRoots is available as a talc-based dry planter box formulation and a wettable powder formulation. ILeVO® treated seed offers protection against sudden death syndrome and nematodes in the seed zone throughout the critical growing period. 13;10;
DEKALB® Disease Shield™ corn products offer high yield potential along with strong disease tolerance to five of the most common corn diseases: anthracnose stalk rot, Goss’s wilt, gray leaf spot, northern corn leaf blight, and in limited geographies, southern rust. In fields and geographies where these diseases have been past problems, these products should be considered for the 2018 growing season. DEKALB® Disease Shield™ corn products automatically receive the ELITE tier of treatment.13;10;
For 2018 Central and Northern Illinois (Indiana) DEKALB® brand RIB Complete® Corn Blend products that are DEKALB® Disease Shield™ corn products include:13;10;
Consideration should be given to the utilization of optional seed treatments to help minimize agronomic risks, which can help maintain genetic yield potential. Consult with your DEKALB® and Asgrow® brands seed dealer regarding the benefits of seed treatments.
Weed control remains an important function for maximizing soybean yield potential. Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® soybean seeds allow for the use of XtendiMax® Herbicide with VaporGrip® Technology to help control difficult weeds.
